YWCA of Central Virginia

Junior Board of Directors

Q: What is the YWCA of Central Virginia?

A:  The YWCA of Central Virginia is located in Lynchburg and has been in existence since 1912.  Our

mission is the empowerment of women and the elimination of racism.  We are proud of the programs

we operate – Domestic Violence Prevention Center (DVPC) including the Children’s Supervised

Visitation Center, Women’s Residence and Transitional Housing, Ygyrl Leaders and Racial Justice.

The DVPC provides support for domestic violence victims and works toward the reduction and

elimination of family violence. The Women’s Residence and Transitional Housing Programs provide

affordable, safe housing and work towards the reduction and elimination of homelessness.  The

Ygyrl Leaders Program provides mentoring for teenage girls and empowers them for the future.  Our

Racial Justice Program works toward racial equity in our community through awareness events.

Q: What is the YWCA Junior Board of Directors?

A:  The YWCA Junior Board of Directors is a group of young women, ages 16-25, who work with the

Board of Directors to govern the YWCA.  The Junior Board of Directors’ primary focus is

community outreach.  Members are responsible for presenting YWCA program information to the

community via special events and community partnerships.  Raising awareness about our beneficial

program is important because all programs affect our community.

Serving on the YWCA Junior Board of Directors is in a volunteer capacity.

Q:  How can I benefit from serving on the YWCA Junior Board of Directors?

A: Serving on the Junior Board of Directors will build leadership skills, familiarize you with the

Lynchburg community and local agencies, and enhance your communication and public speaking

skills.  Members of the Junior Board of Directors have a sense of responsibility and ownership of the

YWCA.  Most of all, all young women who volunteer as a Junior Board Member will be empowered

to succeed in all endeavors.

Q: What is the time commitment for Board service?

A:  Members of the Junior Board of Directors will be required to attend bi-monthly meetings and special

events hosted by the YWCA.  The average monthly time commitment is 3-5 hours.

Q: What is the mission of the YWCA Junior Board of Directors?

A: To educate, engage and empower young women in the Lynchburg community to be leaders and reach

their full potential.
