Major Benjamin Follansbee was an airborne Ranger who subsequently earned his coveted Special Forces tab and became a Green Beret. He was a HALO free fall jumpmaster and a Special Forces ODA team leader as well as a Special Forces company commander. He served on multiple deployments in both Iraq and Afghanistan and was described by his peers and mentors as being highly dedicated and accomplished, but also humble, loyal and compassionate. Major Follansbee had two bronze stars among his many commendations and was repeatedly identified by his senior officers as being destined for high command. He had a promised nomination to Delta Force. An avid student of history, Major Follansbee was dedicated to and lived by the highest standards of Special Forces. For reasons we may never understand, this bright, determined young man, full of such promise, tragically took his own life in December of 2012.

His parents, Dr. and Mrs. William Follansbee, know firsthand the alarming statistics about suicide in the military and the challenges that many veterans face as they transition from military duty to civilian life. For that reason, the Follansbee family, in partnership with Animal Friends, has established the Major Ben Follansbee Pets for Vets Memorial Fund to support veterans programming at Animal Friends including the Pets for Vets - Pittsburgh Chapter and our Friends for Vets adoption program. Some estimates suggest that as many as 20% of returning military veterans suffer from PTSD, depression or other related conditions. It is believed that companion animals can not only be a friend but potentially a lifesaving therapy for many returning service men and women.

At Animal Friends, we have specially designed adoption programs that are dedicated to supporting and thanking veterans while providing a second chance for shelter pets by rescuing, rehabilitating and pairing them with America’s veterans who could benefit from a lifesaving companion animal. Your gift today to this important fund will help bridge that connection between a shelter animal and the veteran who so desperately needs him.

Please give generously.
