Obama Administration Spares Young
Immigrants from Deportation

Mid-June, President Obama eased enforcement of the nation's immigration laws, an extraordinary step offering a chance for hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants to stay in the country and work.

Embraced by Hispanics, his actions touched off an election-year confrontation with many Republicans.

Obama said the change would become effective immediately to "lift the shadow of deportation from these young people."

"Let's be clear, this is not amnesty, this is not immunity, this is not a path to citizenship, this is not a permanent fix," Obama said from the White House Rose Garden. "This is the right thing to do."

The administration said the change will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants who have lived in fear of deportation. It bypasses Congress and partially achieves the goals of the "DREAM Act," legislation that would have provided a pathway to citizenship for young illegal immigrants who went to college or served in the military.

In Loving Memory of Toby Osos
YWCA Supporter & Racial Justice Advocate

It is with deepest regret that the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley announces the passing of longtime YWCA supporter and racial justice advocate, Toby Osos. On Friday, June 29th, 2012, at 1PM, Toby passed away at 92 years of age from a heart attack. Toby was a highly respected community advocate, volunteer and friend throughout the Pasadena community for many years, and she will be greatly missed.

Toby was born in Michigan City, Indiana. She started school at age five and was swiftly advanced to the second grade in her one room schoolhouse. Toby went on to attend the University of Minnesota where she obtained her Bachelor's in Psychology, and later received her Master's in Psychometrics from the University of Chicago.

Her life in Pasadena began when she started working at the Veteran's Guidance Center in 1946, helping veterans best navigate the GI Bill. She then went on to spend 25 years with Griffenhagen Kroeger, and international development consulting firm. Finally, her employment years rounded out at the California State University System's Chancellor's Office, where her unofficial title became known as "Social Change Agent."

Toby has been working for social justice through the decades volunteering with organization such as the Unorganized Students (opposed to fraternity influences on her campus), Hestia House, United Way, Pasadena Settlement House, the Southern California Regional Council of Non-Governmental Organizations Affiliated with the United Nations Association, Altrusa Club, Pasadena Area Liberal Arts Center, Personnel Commission of Pasadena Unified School, and many others.

The YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley has been honored to have Toby as a strong supporter of our organization for 65 years. Our thoughts and prayers are extended to Toby, her family, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
