Girls Empowerment Camp 2012!

The YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley announced last month the kickoff to the tenth annual Girl’s Empowerment Summer Camp, held at the YWCA on North Fair Oaks Avenue. Campers from Pasadena and surrounding areas have already participated in three weeks of educational trips, motivational activities and pure fun. The campers take a trip everyday and have so far been to Raging Waters, The Wrigley House, Side Street Project, Ringling Brothers Circus, Whole Foods and Charles Drew University of Science and Medicine, amongst others.

“I normally sit at home during the summer or go hang out with friends but this camp has been such a great experience so far, we have been to places that I only dreamed of going to, I am excited for next summer,” said Jasmine William (age 15), Girls Empowerment Camper.

The camp is focused on building self-esteem, friendships, new skills, exploring new ideas, experiencing college life and empowering girls to dream big. Camp staff projected 15 campers this summer but doubled their numbers topping out at 29 girls between the ages of 9-16. Even after the registration deadline, phone calls kept ringing in for open spaces due to the buzz around the neighborhood.

“We have set our goals for next year really high with the success of our 2012 Girls Empowerment Camp. We feel that girls in the Pasadena community should be able to have an enjoyable and memorable summer camp experience without sacrificing fun,” said Karen Draine, Program Director of the YWCA Pasadena-Foothill Valley.

The YWCA would like to give special thanks to its 2012 sponsors: AT&T, Whole Foods Market, StoneFire Grill, Bucca Di Beppo, California Pizza Kitchen, Pasadena Rotary Club and El Pollo Loco. Sponsors provided aid and food for our 2012 Girl's Empowerment Camp participants.

A Big Step Forward for Women in America!
No more co-pays for contraception

Paying for birth control is now a thing of the past! Effective August 1, 2012--for the first time EVER--women in America will have access to potentially life-saving preventive care free of charge. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, services including well-woman visits, gestational diabetes screening, breastfeeding support and supplies, contraception, domestic violence screening, and more will be covered without cost sharing in new health plans--giving women more control over their own health.

Many Thanks!
