Italian American Bishops Lead $2 Million Fundraising Effort to Construct New Italian Chapel

At the Basilica of the National Shrine

Your Contribution makes a difference!

In fall 2006, the Italian American Bishops, under the leadership of His Eminence Anthony Cardinal Bevilacqua, Archbishop Emeritus of Philadelphia, began the process to establish an Italian Chapel in honor of Our Lady of Pompei in the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, DC.    Among the many national chapels in the Shrine, this will be the first specifically honoring our nation’s Italian heritage.   A design for the chapel has been approved—but in order to realize our goal, we need your participation.

The American Bishops of Italian descent have personally donated over $40,000 to initiate a fundraising campaign to raise the $2 million necessary for the construction of this newest chapel.  We are seeking your assistance as we begin this important phase of the project and ask if you would consider making a contribution toward the chapel.   While $2 million is certainly a large amount of money, every donation is important as we build the funds to erect this chapel in honor of Our Lady of Pompei and the heritage of so many Italian Americans who continue to minister the Gospel throughout the world.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Pompei, will recognize the deep devotion of the Italian-American Community and others have for the Blessed Mother.  It will be prominently located in the West Narthex of the National Shrine where hundreds of thousands of visitors enter the Basilica. The design of the chapel is complete and a prominent space in the National Shrine has been reserved.  You may click here to see a brochure with an artist’s preliminary design of the chapel.

The main feature will be a mosaic inspired by the original oil painting on canvas that depicts Our Lady and the Christ Child offering the Rosary to Saints Dominic and Catherine. Adorning the walls of the chapel will be the Mysteries of Light, added to the Rosary by Pope John Paul II in 2002.  This will be the first time the Mysteries of Light will be represented within the walls of the Basilica.  You may click here to see a preliminary artist’s design of the Mysteries of Light, to be installed in the chapel.

For many years the addition of an Italian Chapel at the Shrine has been in the discussion stages.   Now that the design and plan for this magnificent addition to Mary’s Shrine are complete, your generosity can make the construction of these plans a reality.   For your convenience, you may make your contribution online using our secure website, or you may mail your contribution to:
