The campus community is opening its doors to Richmond families to give them the opportunity to meet key University faculty and staff members and ask questions about the services and programs offered to students. 

1.     Speech Center Open House
     Weinstein Hall, Fourth Floor, Room 408 - Building # 8
     Families are welcome to tour the Speech Center and view examples of speech sessions conducted by student consultants. Center director Linda Hobgood will be your host. The University of Richmond's Speech Center is a valuable resource to students, staff, and faculty.  It has become a model for other universities of what can be accomplished when administrative support, student dedication, and prudent use of technology all converge in pursuit of a worthy objective.

2.   Tours of the Henry M. Cannon Memorial Chapel - Building # 36
     Families are welcome to tour the Cannon Memorial Chapel which stands on a slight rise overlooking the east end of Westhampton Lake and serves as a central place of reflection, worship, and peace. The University of Richmond Chapel Guild, a group of Westhampton College alumnae and University of Richmond supporters will be your hosts. Come hear the history of this unique building and see if you can find the hidden Richmond spider in its magnificent stain glass windows. Dedicated in 1929, the Henry M. Cannon Memorial Chapel is used for many facets of University life: religious services for students and members of the community; cultural events such as concerts and recitals academic assemblies; and various honors convocations.

3.   Career Development Center Open House

     It is never too early to start…and we're here to help!  Families are invited to tour the Career Development Center and meet with staff to explore the services and programs available to Richmond students. Come ask us about career counseling, externships, special events, job search preparation and on-campus recruiting.

4. Writing Center Open House

    Family members are invited to tour the Writing Center, which strives to provide instruction to University of Richmond writers at all levels of experience. Dr. Joseph J. Essid, Writing Center director, will be your host.

5. Academic Skills Center

    Family member are invited to tour the University of Richmond’s Academic Skills Center. The Center assists students in understanding and learning ways to improve their cognitive skills, thus maximizing their collegiate experience and personal development. Academic Skills Center staff are engaged in helping students assess their academic strengths and weaknesses, hone their study skills and encourage campus and community involvement. Director Hope Walton will be your host.

6. Bonner Center for Civic Engagement

    626 E. Broad St: Engaging and educating in the heart of the city, the newly opened UR Downtown.

How important is a major? What is the relationship between an academic major and a career? What resources are available to connect students’ choice of major to their career interests? The deans of the School of Arts and Sciences, the Robins School of Business and the Jepson School of Leadership Studies will join the Career Development Center (CDC) to talk about choosing a major and helping your student transition from an undeclared or general studies program to a major. Some of the topics to be discussed include:
• What questions should your student ask his or her advisor about choosing a major?
• Beyond an academic advisor and the CDC, who can best assist your student in making decisions about a major and a potential career?
• How important are internships and other forms of experiential education? Do summer jobs matter?

For elected officials, school principals, corporate leaders, and many others, this diversity poses unique challenges. Abigail Adams, the wife of the second president, is well known for her "Remember the Ladies" letter, in which she urged her husband John and his colleagues in the Continental Congress to include women in the "Code of Laws" they were about to create for the new nation. Although she lost that battle, she won another one that has never been reported: she turned her own household into a laboratory where she could imagine what gender equality might look like.

This bus tour will include information on landmarks such as the Virginia State Capitol and St. John’s Church, the site of Patrick Henry’s “Liberty of Death” speech. In addition, you will also see where Richmond College was founded and the University’s new UR downtown building.
