Erik Viirre, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer
Dr. Erik Viirre will supervise the scientific effort as CTO. Dr. Viirre is an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Division of Otolaryngology of the University of California San Diego School of Medicine, a Research Assistant Professor in the UCSD Department of Cognitive Science, as well as a practicing neurotologist. He is a scientific co-founder of TOP and has extensive research and clinical experience in the arena of hearing disorders. His clinical specialties are in the diagnosis and treatment of vertigo, motion sickness and balance problems as well as tinnitus. At UCSD, Dr. Viirre has been the Principal Investigator on a National Institutes of Health research grant, studying the use of Virtual Reality technology in rehabilitating patients with balance disorders, and he is a co-investigator on technologic and pharmacologic treatments for tinnitus. He has also served as a consultant for various laboratories and industries, including the US Navy, the National Academy of Sciences, and technology companies. Dr. Viirre is a collaborator on projects at the Human Interface Technology Laboratory of the University of Washington including vision research on an advanced visual display technology called the Virtual Retinal display (VRD). Dr. Viirre is also the principal investigator on projects for DARPA and NASA.
Dr. Viirre received his Ph.D. in neurophysiology in 1987 at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada and M.D. in 1988 at the same institution. In 1989 he was an intern at St. Joseph's Hospital in London, Canada. He then went onto a fellowship in the Imaging Research Group of the Robarts Research Institute in London and had a medical practice delivering basic eye care. He also studied vestibular disorders in the Department of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery with Dr. Joseph McClure at the University of Western Ontario. In 1994 – 95, Dr. Viirre was an Assistant Visiting Professor in the Department of Neurology at the UCLA School of Medicine and in the Jules Stein Eye research Institute at UCLA. From 1995 to 1999 he was a senior staff scientist at the Human Interface Technology Laboratory at the University of Washington in Seattle.
