1,700 New Yorkers Came out in Support for Kids in Haiti – 14th Annual Spring Run Raises over $190,000 in Support of Education for Impoverished Children

Thanks to the nearly 1,700 runners and walkers who showed their support on Saturday, April 14th at the Concern Spring Run in Central Park, over $191,483 (and still counting!) was raised for children in Haiti, where one in every two school-aged kids are not in school.

This is the 14th year for the Concern Spring Run, an annual four-mile run through New York City’s Central Park. The 2012 race raised more money than any other run before it, surpassing its goal by $36,483.

“We were deeply moved by the outpouring of support from thousands of New Yorkers for children in Haiti,” said Siobhan Walsh, Executive Director for Concern Worldwide US. “Their kindness, commitment, and compassion for those thousands of miles away make what we do possible and because of their support, more children in Haiti’s most impoverished areas will have access to higher quality education.”

The runners were joined by more than 80 volunteers who gave up their Saturday mornings to make sure the morning went off without a hitch. “More than any other event that we host during the year, we really could not do the Spring Run without the commitment of our volunteers,” said Dara Burke, special events officer for Concern Worldwide US.

Since the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti in 2010, Concern has provided basic education to more than 15,000 children by rehabilitating 33 schools and setting up temporary learning spaces for children who were displaced by the disaster. With the money raised, Concern will continue to support these programs, which also include teacher training and supply distribution for classrooms and students.
