Dale Abrahamse, owner of Abrahamse & Company Builders, Inc., has completed the construction of five homes his company broke ground on in the Fall of 2006. The homes have passed stringent testing required by the program and are now certified by American Lung Association Health House® program. The Charlottesville project was the first American Lung Association Health House® project in Virginia.
The American Lung Association Health House® program was created to help teach homebuilders and homeowners how to create the healthiest indoor environment using the best materials and techniques for them. The Health House® Builder Guidelines offer choices, choices, and more choices! Trained builders use these standards to construct homes as healthy systems. Flexibility within the building standards helps homeowners customize their construction according to individualized health issues, the quality of indoor air required, budget, and preference. The Health House® is more than a house; it’s a way of building healthier!
The five custom designed European-styled homes are located one mile from downtown Charlottesville at 1012 Druid Avenue walking distance from the mall. Beautiful views and granite kitchen countertops are only a few extras these homes have to offer. Certified by American Lung Association Health House®, Earthcraft and Energy Star, these homes offer superior indoor air quality, energy efficiency, durability and sustainable construction.
You might ask what types of special features deserve such accolades. For example, zero or low volatile organic compound (VOC) paints, finishes, sealers and grouts were used throughout the house. Volatile organic compounds release into our indoor air and can be a lung health hazard. The homes are also installed with radon mitigation systems below the basement slab to reduce or eliminate exposure to radon. Radon is a colorless and odorless gas naturally released from the Earth’s surface that is the second leading cause of lung cancer. The homes are being marketed by Real Estate III.
