During the 2005 General Assembly session, Delegate Robert Bell from Charlottesville introduced legislation to create a new Lung Cancer Research license plate. Local citizens had encouraged Delegate Bell to help them find new funding for lung cancer research. Proceeds from the sale of the new plates will benefit the American Lung Association of Virginia to support lung cancer research, awareness and prevention.
The Lung Cancer Research plate is considered a special license plate by DMV. The annual fee for the plate is $25.00 in addition to the prescribed fee for state license plates. For each $25.00 fee collected in excess of 1,000 registrations, $15.00 will be directed to the American Lung Association of Virginia for lung cancer research, awareness, and prevention.
