Do I have to be a runner or an athlete?
You don’t have to run — you can walk too! More than 94 percent of our Train To End Stroke participants have never completed a full or half marathon, and over 60 percent of our participants walk instead of run.
Our training program is designed for beginners who wish to get in the best shape of their lives. We have qualified running and walking coaches who will help you during weekly trainings and give you a schedule for your weekday workouts.

Do I have to do a full marathon?
No. A large portion of Train To End Stroke participants complete half marathons each year.

|
How much money will I need to raise?
The minimum funds you have to raise varies by where you live. The minimums are set so that the administrative costs remain below 20 percent of total dollars raised. The remaining 80 percent supports the work of the American Stroke Association.
When you attend an information session in your community, you will learn of the specific fund-raising minimum for each marathon location. |

|
|
How will I raise the money?
Train To End Stroke staff and volunteers will help you every step of the way. Your fund-raising coach will help you develop your personal fund-raising plan, which includes access to your own Web page. Also, you will receive a participant packet full of additional fund raising ideas from letter-writing campaigns to great fundraising events.
Each participant is paired with a mentor who has completed Train To End Stroke in the past. They will share their ideas for success from their own experience. |
|
|
Where does the money go?
Seventy-nine percent of your donation funds the research and educational programs of the American Stroke Association. The remaining 21 percent pays for travel and administrative expenses. The ASA spends more money on stroke research and programs than any other organization except the federal government. During fiscal year 2006, the American Stroke Association spent more than $156 million on stroke-related research and programs. |

|
Who provides the inspiration for going the distance?
We encourage you to choose someone you care about to be your inspirational “Stroke Hero.” If you don’t know a stroke survivor, you can run or walk in honor of a Stroke Hero assigned to you.

Why should I do this?
This is a life-changing experience. Your commitment will allow you to impact your own life and the lives of others in communities across the nation. Train To End Stroke will enable you to get in great shape and reach an incredible goal — you will be among the 1 percent of Americans who have completed a marathon!
Your commitment will give you the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of others. Each year approximately 700,000 Americans have a stroke — the money you raise will save lives. The life you save could even be your own.
