CFILC’s Diversity Leadership Institute salutes the National Day of Service!

“Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter”.-Martin Luther King Jr.

photo of King delivering I Had A Dream SpeechThe national Martin Luther King Day of Service was started by former Pennsylvania U.S. Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis, who co-authored the King Holiday and Service Act. The federal legislation challenges Americans to transform the King Holiday into a day of citizen action and volunteer service in honor of Dr. King. The federal legislation was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on August 23, 1994. The challenge to transform January 18, 2010 into a day of action and service follows the legacy and teachings of Dr. King:

“On January, 18, 2010, people of all ages and backgrounds will come together to improve lives, bridge social barriers, and move our nation closer to the “Beloved Community” that Dr. King envisioned. Dr. Martin Luther King devoted his life’s work to causes of equality and social justice. He taught that through nonviolence and service to one another, problems such as hunger and homelessness, prejudice and discrimination can be overcome. Dr. King’s teachings can continue to guide us in addressing our nation’s most pressing needs---poverty, economic insecurity, job loss and education”.-MLK Day.gov

In the spirit of Dr. King’s legacy, we encourage you to seek out volunteer opportunities to help address some of our nation’s ongoing issues, and to do your part to move us closer to the “Beloved Community”.
