Lung Education Centers provide educational programs by medical professionals for lung disease patients
|
Lung diseases affect over one half million Hoosiers and cost over $2 billion annually in direct and indirect costs. Lung education centers are designed to support the physician's care plan with prescribed patient education, thereby enhancing patients' ability to manage their disease. The goal is to improve patients' clinical and economic outcomes, thus reducing health care costs.
Structure
Lung Education Centers are partnerships between health care providers and the American Lung Association of Indiana (ALA-I). At Lung Education Center sites, which may include hospitals, medical clinics or community health centers, professional staff offer educational programs developed and approved by the ALA-I to patients with lung diseases and their families. Standardized education programs are used to reduce emergency room visits and hospital stays, as well as increase patient compliance and physician productivity. ALA-I's materials and programs also facilitate outreach to the local community through efforts such as smoking cessation programs.
Process
Participating health care facilities provide physical space for operations, oversight by a medical director, a coordinator, professional staff and administrative staff. ALA-I supports the partnership in efforts to advertise the Lung Education Center, participates in review committees and cooperates in fund-raising events to support the Lung Education Center.
ALA-I provides standardized programs and training for all Lung Education Center professional staff, eliminating the need for each facility to develop its own materials and ensuring that staff are knowledgeable in the ALA-I's programs. ALA-I continuously trains health care Lung Education Center staff members.
Lung Education Centers provide many benefits to both health care facilities and patients. After the programs have been conducted, patients complete evaluation surveys to measure outcomes and evaluate the program's effectiveness. This information is provided to administrators of Lung Education Centers to permit continuous quality improvement.
