430,700 Americans die each year from tobacco related diseases

Smoking-related diseases claim an estimated 430,700 American lives each year. Smoking costs the United States approximately $97.2 billion each year in health-care costs and lost productivity. It is directly responsible for 87 percent of lung cancer cases and causes most cases of emphysema and chronic bronchitis.
In the next 24 hours, 1,180 Americans will die from tobacco use. In all, 430,700 smokers die from tobacco related disease each year. They are replaced in part by the 3,000 children who start smoking regularly everyday - that's more than one million teens annually, and approximately one-third of these children smokers will eventually die of smoking-related illnesses.
