The Experiences of Latina Immigrant Mothers during the Diagnosis of their Child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder

This project explores the feelings, thoughts, challenges, and experience of Latina Immigrant mothers during the diagnosis of their child with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Understanding the influence of culture on the diagnosis and treatment of children with ASD will help to improve the services available to these families.

Survey of Feeding and Digestive Problems in Children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders: Comparison with non-ASD siblings

Location: Falls Church, VA

The purpose of this survey is to: 1) provide better understanding of the prevalence of feeding problems among children with ASD between the ages of 3 and 12, and to compare them to age-matched siblings; 2) estimate the prevalence of organic and functional gastrointestinal problems among children with ASD and their siblings. The study will add to the existing knowledge on this subject and will help physicians and other professionals provide better care and counseling on this subject to families of children with ASD.

Parental Perception of the Link Between Vaccination and Autism

This study will also look at whether parents’ trust of health professionals and government organizations influences their behavior towards vaccinating a subsequent child.

This study will examine the early development of basic social skills in young children. We will observe how children with various developmental delays and typical development look at people and perceive speech. This research will lead to the development of new methods to diagnose developmental delays in toddlers, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

Comparative Dose Study of Investigational Agent

Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceutical Research & Development is now conducting a study to evaluate the effectiveness, safety and tolerability of a higher and lower dose of an investigational agent in children and adolescents with autism. This agent is approved for use at the higher does. Johnson & Johnson seeks to determine if a lower dose is also effective.

Plasticity in Autism Spectrum Disorders: Noninvasive Magnetic Stimulation

The main purpose of the proposed study is to investigate brain plasticity (the changes that occur in your brain through experience) in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and neurotypical participants using noninvasive transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The brain of individuals with ASD may work in a different way than the brain of those without ASD.

A Controlled Study of Olanzapine in Children With Autism

Location: Philadelphia, PA

This is a 6-week study which investigates the use of olanzapine to decrease disruptive behaviors sometimes associated with children with autism, ages 3 to 12 years old. The study is double-blind and placebo controlled, meaning that patients receive either placebo or olanzapine, and that neither the researchers nor the patients know whether or not they are receiving placebo or olanzapine.

A Molecular Genetic Study of Autism and Related Phenotypes in Extended Pedigrees

Location: Chapel Hill, NC

This study will look at the genetics of autism by examining 12 extended families with more than one family branch containing a member of the family with autism, Asperger’s or Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) ascertained by assessment and medical records.

CN138-178: This study will compare the effectiveness (how well the drug works) of aripiprazole, flexibly dosed with a placebo, in reducing serious behavioral problems in children and adolescents with a diagnosis of autistic disorder (AD).

CN138-179: This study will compare the effectiveness (how well the drug works) of aripiprazole with placebo (fixed dose) in reducing serious behavioral problems in children and adolescents with a diagnosis of autistic disorder (AD).

A Pilot Study of Oral N-Acetylcysteine in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Location: Indianapolis, IN

The purpose of this study is to find out if oral N-acetylcysteine is helpful for improving some of the behavioral symptoms associated with autism spectrum disorders. This study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of oral N-acetylcysteine in children with an autism spectrum disorder. N-acetylcysteine is currently used to treat acetaminophen overdose and certain lung conditions. This medication has not been approved by the FDA for the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Autism risk and exposures/biomarkers measured during the pre-, peri, and neonatal periods: a baby sibs pilot investigation

Location:  Baltimore, MD

This is a pilot project that will collect information and biologic samples from mothers of children with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) during the course of a subsequent pregnancy.   By doing this we hope to learn how to best to collect and analyze this type of data so that we can successfully implement a larger study in the future.  This large study would address the question of whether exposures or biomarkers measured during pregnancy or very early in life increase the risk of a sibling of a child with ASD themselves developing an ASD.
