Congressional Mitochondrial Disease Caucus Briefing
October 20, 2015

The United Mitochondrial Disease Foundation will host our 5th briefing before House Members and their staff.   This session will educate Congress about the connection between mitochondrial dysfunction and cardiac and heart issues.   Speaking at the briefing will be Edward Lesnefsky, MD.   Dr. Lesnefsky works primarily at McGuire V.A. Medical Center where he is Chief of Cardiology, but his activities include administration, basic research and clinical cardiology at both McGuire VA Hospital and at VCU Medical CenteR.  His current research interests include the study of myocardial cell death during heart attacks and their treatment.   the focus of his lab is the study of the role mitochondrial play in the progression of cardiac cell death during heart attacks and treatment.  Also speaking at the briefing will be  David Schubert, PhD., Vice President of Regulatory & Quality for Stealth Biotherapeutics.  Dr. Schubert will discuss the mitochondrial myopathy trial for Bendavia that Stealth has underway, and not only it’s implications for mitochondrial disease patients, but for cardiac patients in general.
