Why Should We Respond to The Da Vinci Code?
Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code has spent more than 160 weeks on the New York Times Best-seller List, having sold more than 30 million copies (more than 40 million copies are in print). On May 19, 2006, Sony Pictures will release the film version, produced by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks.
Polls show that 65% of the American public have neither read the book nor intend to see the movie. So, why has InTouch Ministries decided to address The Da Vinci Code, a work of fiction? Consider these three simple facts:
Fiction can change the world. Uncle Tom's Cabin ?also fiction?was a vital tool in the abolition movement. When President Lincoln met author Harriet Beecher Stowe, he reportedly said, ?So you're the little woman who wrote the book that made this great war.?
Media influences thoughts and behavior. Advertising or ?marketing? is an enormous business?in 2005, ad revenues were $12.5 billion on the Internet alone. Ad campaigns are designed to promote goods, services, and ideas?not only to get people to part with their hard-earned cash, but to get them to believe certain things are right or wrong. Think of how many public service announcements, in the vein of ?CBS Cares,? you've seen.
Culture can be changed in unexpected ways. Playboy magazine began at Hugh Hefner's kitchen table as an effort to mainstream pornography. It was the first time anyone had dared challenge the U.S. Postal Service's anti-obscenity laws by distributing nudity through the mail and, in fact, Hefner did not know if there would be a second issue published. Now pornography is a multi-billion dollar business, and sexual imagery is everywhere.
What will the long-term impact of The DaVinci Code be? That remains to be seen, but even Christians who are not interested in the book should recognize that it will have an effect?one that can be devastating to those who heed its spiritual call.
With that in mind, join us as we explore The DaVinci Code , and discuss how it measures up to the truth about Jesus Christ and His church.
