The Moments That Sustain Us
Psalm 145:1-5
Every believer experiences moments of challenge or discomfort. King David and many other holy men and women throughout history discovered the key to remaining strong and fruitful during trying circumstances. David’s words in http://www.biblegateway.com/bible?version=49&passage=psalm+145:5>Psalm 145:5 encapsulate the most important activity a believer can carry out: “On the glorious splendor of Your majesty and on Your wonderful works, I will meditate.”
Meditation involves Bible reading but goes far beyond skimming a section, as we might with another book. Instead, we need to pray over the Scripture, asking God to show us by His Spirit what a passage means and how we can apply His words to our life. Whatever action He impresses on our minds, we must do.
When we set aside time to meet with God in a quiet place, He will be there, opening our minds and hearts. At first, many people struggle to settle racing thoughts and calm a body that wants to jump up and do something. But meditating is doing. By focusing on God’s Word, we are learning more and increasing our thirst for Him. As we discipline our minds and bodies to meditate, we begin reaping the spiritual benefits of increased discernment and a clear sense of purpose.
We know that God is always with His children in the person of the indwelling Holy Spirit. Meditation changes our knowledge into experience—the insights we gain in our secluded place stay with us so that we are aware that God is constantly by our side, holding us up. No matter how difficult the challenge may be, our loving Father sustains us.
