    Why support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute?

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is a founding member of Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC), which is one of 41 NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the United States and DF/HCC was established to harness the enormous expertise and resources of Harvard's preeminent cancer researchers into one collective force dedicated to the fight against cancer. Because of Dana-Farber's leadership role in this research consortium, we believe in the importance of supporting the Dana-Farber doctors and researchers who have pioneered the discovery, development, and FDA approval of highly effective targeted lifesaving cancer drugs that directly improve and prolong the lives of millions of patients worldwide. Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is known around the world as a leader in advancing the scientific understanding of cancer and turning that knowledge into practice.

Dana-Farber research teams have already spearheaded the development of remarkable targeted drugs like Gleevec (imatinib). Upon its introduction in 2001, Gleevec was featured on the cover of Time Magazine and hailed as a "Magic Bullet" to combat several cancers. Why? Unlike conventional chemotherapy drugs, which indiscriminately kill all rapidly dividing cells, Gleevec targets, suppresses, and kills specific cancerous cells. As a revolutionary form of targeted therapy, Gleevec has shown an unprecedented success rate in patients. As a global leader, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's groundbreaking research fuels the discovery of precision medicines to combat all forms of cancer in children and adults.

What is cutting edge at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute?

Dana-Farber is a principal teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, with their researchers and clinicians teaching courses at Harvard Medical School, Harvard School of Public Health, and Harvard College. Through this partnership, Dana-Farber has been able to further cancer science and therapies with the following cutting-edge research and discoveries:

    • Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy was recently named "Breakthrough of the Year" by Science magazine. Based on discoveries made at Dana-Farber, immunotherapy techniques harness the power of the body's immune system and have spurred long-lasting remissions in some patients with advanced cancers.
    • Genetic Screening/Profile: By screening the tumors of every consenting patient, Dana-Farber is spearheading one of the most comprehensive personalized medicine initiatives, building an extensive genomic database which will greatly improve the precision of future cancer therapies.
    • Chemical Biology: The Chemical Biology Initiative at Dana-Farber is an internationally recognized provider of molecular solutions to problems posed by cancer, initiating discoveries that translate into new drugs for cancer patients.
    • Early Drug Development Center: The extraordinary level of collaboration between Dana-Farber's scientists and clinicians has led to the speedy translation of laboratory discoveries into innovative clinical trials that test lifesaving treatments and drugs for cancer patients all over the world.
