California Western Welcomes Pharmaceutical Expert, Hosts Annual San Diego Health Policy Conference

SAN DIEGO, March 21, 2013 - Underscoring its commitment to multi-dimensional legal education, California Western recognizes that healthcare and law are no longer distinct practices, regularly hosting curricular events that continue to examine the intersection of these disciplines.
Today, Associate Professor in the History of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University, Jeremy Greene, M.D., Ph.D., explored the legal complexities that arise in the healthcare sector as pharmaceutical companies compete with one another. Dr. Greene focused on the history of marketing generic drugs, asserting that their claim of being identical to name brand counterparts lies solely in the evidence that they are similar enough to be functionally interchangeable. As demand for generic substitutes has grown—from only 10% of the American pharmaceutical market in 1960 to nearly 80% by 2010—so too have conflicts over how one can prove that generics are truly equivalent to their brand-name counterparts.

On Friday, March 22, the Institute of Health Law Studies (IHLS) at California Western hosts the Ninth Annual San Diego Health Policy Conference, "Technology and Global Health." Speakers will discuss how rapidly developing technologies in research, online marketing, material transport, and pharmaceutical manufacturing have created great promise in promoting global health. With that promise come potential risks associated with these advancing technologies, with systemic vulnerabilities arising from an increasingly connected global marketplace. The conference will explore some of these risks and benefits to global health, lessons, and policies that we can adopt from other sectors, and how ethical norms have changed due to the digital world and global access. To learn more about confirmed speakers Bryan A. Liang, M.D., Ph.D., J.D., Commander James Balcius, M.S., M.S.P.H., Thomas Kubic, Timothy K.
