Center wins funding, planning assistance
to launch elders program

In response to requests from the LGBT community, The Center will soon provide programs for elders. With the securing of a capacity building grant of federal money through JVA Consultants, Center staff will this month begin designing the framework for the new program. JVA is a private consulting firm that has secured a federal contract to work with Colorado nonprofits developing services for the Baby Boomer generation.

The grant involves a monetary award to The Center and technical assistance projected through 2010.
Building on the years of success of Gay and Gray in the West, The Center’s program will grow into a comprehensive program developing outreach to GLBT elders for a range of social supports and services as well as advocacy for GLBT seniors with existing social services.

 2008 sets new records

Once again, we wowed Denver. The 2008 PrideFest will go into history as one of the best and largest and most successful. For two days, Civic Center Park saw celebration and festivities as 250,000 people gathered to commemorate the modern movement for GLBT community and rights. Family Field Day on Saturday was again a hit with the Kids Parade and Dogs in Drag. Sophie B. Hawkins headed up the afternoon concert. The Parade on Sunday, headed by transgender activist Donna Rose, began a day of entertainment, dancing and celebrating. The Center’s Healthy Living program’s Oasis drew crowds seeking a break and info on healthy lifestyles. Martha Wash headlined the entertainment.

Thanks to our sponsors who helped make the festivities possible: Coors Brewing Co., Stoli, Public Service Credit Union, KGNU, Comcast, Denver Film Society, Hewlett Packard, OutFront Colorado, Sirius Satellite Radio, ElDorado Spring Water, Café Vivid, Mike Shaw Automotive, Martini Radio, Purple Avocado Catering, One FM, Washington Mutual, The Party 95.7, Kaiser Permanente, Blog Pro, Quit Line, National Teleprinting, Wells Fargo, Denver Visitors & Convention Bureau, AM 760, CH2MHill.

Marriage: Make change, not lawsuits

The wrong lawsuit at the wrong time could set back the whole movement for lesbian and gay marriage rights. That’s what national civil rights organizations, including Lambda Legal, the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR), Gay & Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), and the ACLU are saying in light of the California Supreme Court ruling same-sex marriage legal in that state.

“Go to California, get married if it’s right for you, and live happily ever after,” said Mindy Barton, director of The Center’s Legal Initiatives Project (CLIP), “but don’t come home and sue for rights here.” CLIP advises Colorado couples who marry to publicly call themselves married and ask that family, friends, neighbors, businesses, employers and the community treat that marriage with respect.

The idea behind this advice is logical even if disappointing to many. “The reality is that we need to start with those states where we have the best odds of winning,” she said. Then, only after a critical mass of states has legalized marriage, can the movement turn to Congress and the federal courts.

Center, Children's Museum host Family Pride

The Center co-hosted the first official Pre-Pride Family Celebration on June 19 at the Denver Children’s Museum. This first time event attracted 250 parents and kids who had the opportunity to enjoy the museum and visit over a dozen resource and information booths. Pictured here are Melinda Patterson (r) and Bea Romer of the Bea Romer College of Parental Arts.

PrideFest first event to go green

Thanks to your cooperation, PrideFest was able to divert and recycle over a half ton of material from the festival this year! As the first step in our effort to reduce our carbon footprint, PrideFest this year introduced a single-stream recycling program as part of an overall three year plan to reduce our environmental impact. Pride is part of a coalition of Denver festivals committed to greening our events, and is the first major event in Civic Center park to introduce a recycling program. Fabulous!
