| Hey Dude,
Tis the season to be thankful! With Thanksgiving right around the corner, here is one of our favorite natural highs; thanking friends and family members for how they've contributed to your life. Who has been there for you this year or supported you the most through the ups and downs? Telling others how much they mean to you can certainly start your adrenaline flowing, and the outcome often leaves both people feeling better then they did before. Celebrate the Season with Holiday Natural Highs!
With the prevalence of holiday parties and drunk drivers that begin to occur this time of year, it's never too early to start thinking about how you're going to spend your time off during the winter break. The fun part is, the holidays often provide a lot of "seasonal" natural highs that you might not get to experience all year round. If you live in a cold state, maybe it's making snow men, snow angels, or snow shoeing.
If you live in a warm state, maybe it's making ginger bread houses, shopping for presents, or ice skating at the local rink! It may even be just helping family members prepare for company or hanging out with people you don't see very often. These types of activities only come around a few weeks out of the year but they are still great alternatives to drugs and alcohol. Which ones are you looking forward to?
The Affect of Drug Use on Younger Brothers and Sisters
According to a report by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, the drug problem of a close family member creates enduring stress, anxiety and conflict that greatly affect the health and well-being of a family and its individual members. The younger brothers and sisters felt that the drug problem broke the hope of a good relationship with their older sibling, whose preoccupation with drugs made them uninterested, self-centered, argumentative and unreliable. They also worried about their sibling's health and well-being, learning about the consequences of overdose, infection, homelessness and drug-related violence in school.
Some times the younger siblings were introduced to drugs by their friends and not by their drug using brothers and sisters. However, consistently seeing drugs and drug-taking at home, often made it look safe, taught its use, and made casual experimentation possible for the younger brothers and sisters.
It is important for an older sibling to ask themselves if they like who they are on drugs and if they care whether their own little brother or sister uses drugs as well. Michael Jackson?s Man in the Mirror lyrics say it best, "If you wanna make the world a better place take a look at yourself, and then make a change."
Bring Out Your Inner Child: A Natural High That Costs Nothing!
You can only go to the movies, mall, or out to eat so many times with your buddies before it starts to get a little old. Instead of playing the "what are we going to do?" game over the telephone for an hour, have an elementary school night and bring out the inner child in you and your friends. Share kindergarten pictures, go to the nearest playground (and of course, swing on the swings) or play a few rounds of Spoons! For those of you who don't know what Spoons is, click here for some instructions. It is a very simple, yet entertaining game. For a more extreme version, hide the spoons throughout the room instead of putting them in the center. Some other ideas are to go bowling, miniature golfing, or roller-skating. Make cupcakes or dirt cups and pretend it's somebody's birthday. The important thing is to just have fun! Remeber how it was in 1998!!
