How to Stay Cool this Summer
Everyone loves summer, but when the temperature is up in the 90s and 100s, the heat seems unbearable. Here are some cheap, easy ways to beat the heat:
- Invite some friends over, and have a water balloon fight! Make sure you have enough balloons. See who can fill up the most balloons in five minutes so that you don?t have to do it all yourself!
- Go chill in a movie theater- the air conditioning is always cranked up!
- Buy an inexpensive Slip-N-Slide (remember those?) or make your own by weighing down a tarp on soft grass and spraying water on it
- Host an ice cream social at your house, complete with an ice cream bar and plenty of toppings
- Go ice skating! Many indoor rinks are open year-round. It will definitely be colder than outside!
- If sweltering nights keep you awake, try sticking your sheets in the freezer an hour before you go to bed
A Peer's Perspective on Talking to a Friend About Drugs
What would you do or say if you found out one of your good friends tried drugs for the first time over the weekend?
"This is a tough situation because I still want to be their friend and I wouldn't want to act like a parent. If my friend tried drugs, I would try not to pass judgment on them and I would try to understand why they felt that they needed to try drugs. I would talk to my friend but I wouldn't be confrontational or accusatory about their choice. I would encourage them not to do it again and focus on their natural high instead, but ultimately it is their choice whether or not to do drugs. If my friend continued to do drugs that would impact our relationship. I would want to get help for my good friend if they consistently did drugs. I would look for a way to anonymously refer them to a support group."
Natural High 4 Talent Showcase: Lisa Leslie
You've most likely heard of this outstanding basketball player. She plays center for the Los Angeles Sparks, played at USC, and led Team USA to four gold medals in the Olympics. She was named MVP in the WNBA three times, and became the first WNBA player to dunk in a game in 2002. Her name is Lisa Leslie. Leslie was born on July 7, 1972, and was raised in South Central Los Angeles. She has two sisters and four half-brothers, is married to Michael Lockwood, and has a young daughter named Lauren. Leslie recently announced that she is going to retire after the 2009 season, which ends in September. She has authored a book on her remarkable journey, titled Don't Let the Lipstick Fool You. Leslie also signed with Wilhemina models in 1996 and has modeled in Vogue magazine. Lisa Leslie is definitely one of the best female basketball players to ever set foot on the court.
