Student Testimonial
"We just watched this in health class today. I think it's pretty moving. Especially since it shows that some famous athletes don't use drugs to become better."

Unique Drug Prevention Strategies from Radical Parenting
Vanessa Van Petten, youthologist and teen author of the parenting book "You're Grounded!", manages RadicalParenting.com, a parenting blog written by 60 teen writers, ages 12-20 to help parents and adults get a honest and open view into the world and mind of youth.
After watching the Natural High Series, Vanessa realized how much the drug scene for youth has changed and how difficult it can be for adults to keep up with and help prevent drug abuse. "I thought that Natural High gave an amazing view into this world and some insightful and proactive advice." Vanessa felt compelled to share a few of her own unique ideas for drug advocates, parents and youth themselves.
- Be the Scapegoat
Youth should always learn to say no, but when they can?t, they need to know that they have a scapegoat, or someone who can help them be a reason not to drink or smoke.
- Follow through on Partying Sober
Make it easy for teens and youth to check-in with someone. Sometimes, giving them some accountability is just enough to get them to choose to party sober.
- The Danger of Boredom
I often write about how drug use amongst youth starts with Boredom. Be aware of this phenomenon and see if you your kids also relate to the danger of boredom.
- Anti-Boredom Lists
If boredom is a big problem, here is a list of some great activities for youth to do and party sober.
- Communication
Learn how to be their sounding board, how they can open up to you and you can open up to them. Keeping communication open and showing them you care for them is giving them the best reason to find their own Natural High.
Kids Vote Favorably on Beer Commercials
According to a release from the Drug-Free Action Alliance, commercials for alcohol, specifically beer, are ranked top amongst students' favorites during the infamous Super Bowl advertisements. In a survey conducted with more then 8,400 youth in middle and high school, the top two spots were for Doritos followed by 3 ads for Anheuser-Busch. I?m sure we all had a few laughs at these, so what's the big deal you ask? "Research has shown the negative impact that alcohol marketing has on youth", said the report. One study published found that youth who saw more alcohol ads on average drank more than those who did not see the ads. This can account for a large percentage of our youth when the Super bowl brings in 98.7 million viewers in 2008 alone. Read more here.
A Youth Perspective on Reinforcing the Natural High Message
We asked our student contributor, how can parents or teachers reinforce the message of choosing a natural high over drugs? What additional activities, lessons, or words could they engage in at home or in the classroom?
In addition to the Natural High DVD, having a discussion in class about the movie would help reinforce the message. Encouraging everyone to share their natural highs and discussing everyone's experience with drugs (such as if they've ever been offered drugs, if they have friends that have done drugs, or if they know anyone that's died from doing drugs) would emphasize the movie. I think that everyone wants to know that they're not the only ones saying no to drugs, and discussing being drug-free with other students would support that. I think that if parents could be aware that the movie will be shown on a specific day, then they could discuss it with their children that night. They can also help reinforce the message of Natural High by helping their child find theirs, try different ones, or get them involved in extracurricular activities or clubs. However, parents should try to approach it as an open discussion rather than preaching to their kids.
Natural High 4 Talent Showcase: Lisa Leslie
You've most likely heard of this outstanding basketball player. She plays center for the Los Angeles Sparks, played at USC, and led Team USA to four gold medals in the Olympics. She was named MVP in the WNBA three times, and became the first WNBA player to dunk in a game in 2002. Her name is Lisa Leslie. Leslie was born on July 7, 1972, and was raised in South Central Los Angeles. She has two sisters and four half-brothers, is married to Michael Lockwood, and has a young daughter named Lauren. Leslie recently announced that she is going to retire after the 2009 season, which ends in September. She has authored a book on her remarkable journey, titled Don't Let the Lipstick Fool You. Leslie also signed with Wilhemina models in 1996 and has modeled in Vogue magazine. Lisa Leslie is definitely one of the best female basketball players to ever set foot on the court.
