Natural High 4 Talent Showcase - Anna Rawson

Dear Educator,

We can't say enough great things about the following FREE resource. Dispatch Magazine (offered to high schools) and Whyville (for middle schools) are fantastic compilations that are sure to interest your students. Similar to the Natural High DVD Series, these publications strive to reflect the heart and soul of today's youth by addressing important health and social concerns that teens actually care about while highlighting creative individuals that will hopefully inspire them. The front cover always features THE latest young celeb to draw the students' attention and inside is filled with healthy tips for school and life, articles on people making a difference, help lines, advice columns, and ads against smoking, drugs, and other negative influences. This is one of the few media pieces I've ever come across that is actually safe, if not beneficial, to show your kids.

The publication proudly works with a vast community of teachers, administrators, health care professionals, social workers, parents, and students to make an effective resource for young people. To learn how to get these magazines in your school, contact the publisher, Shael Trunk at Shael@dispatchmagazine.com.

Parent Coffee Series

Looking for another creative approach to prevention? "Parent Coffee Series" combine living room conversation with the impact of an experienced drug prevention expert. Designed by Deborah Engler, Coordinator of Wellness and Education at Emerson College, these "coffees" begin with a presentation on the extent of the substance abuse problem among teens, and follow with a discussion on topics such as how to approach parents who may have allowed kids to drink at their homes. This all takes place in a local parent's home, where parents seemed more open to discussing issues then in a school auditorium or parent program. The parents are then asked to commit to doing one thing different to discourage the use of drugs and alcohol among the teenagers in their community.

We first heard of this program through one of our referred Natural High Speaker Contacts, Matt Bellace, who recently had the privilege of sitting in on one. For more information, download this document on how to set up a parent coffee series in your community.

The New Ecstasy: Salvia Divinorum

Salvia Divinorum, commonly referred to as Salvia, is the strongest known naturally occurring hallucinogen, and is now the most commonly used hallucinogenic drug in the U.S., behind ecstasy. An herb of the mint family, Salvia is ingested through chewing the leaves of the plant, drinking extracted juices, smoking dried leaves, or inhaling vapors. The most common form is to smoke the dried leaves similar to Marijuana in a joint. Although young adult males ages 18-25 are the primary users of Salvia, about 750,000 people ages 12 and older used Salvia in 2006.

Unfortunately, this drug has gained some momentum with a popular following on the social networking site; YouTube. Like ecstasy, users often want to share their hallucinogenic experiences with others, such as this gentleman who titles his video, "Driving on Salvia". Read more about the drug and its impact here.

A Youth Perspective on Drug and Alcohol Supplies

We asked our Student Contributor, where are the majority of students at your school getting alcohol and drugs from?

"In my opinion, the majority of teens at my school are getting drugs and alcohol from their friends, from home, or from outside sources. I am not sure if students at school are dealing, as I have not heard of any dealers, but it's a possibility. My perception is that most kids share drugs like pot, which they buy outside of school, but don't necessarily buy from each other. Alcohol is taken from home most of the time, and is also shared. A new "trend" is to take prescription drugs found at home, and kids also use inhalants to get high. Parents don't seem to be providing alcohol or drugs; I think the role they play is that they don't know teens are getting substances from their house or they ignore it."

"My class had a lot of discussion after the POD segment. The message of what a true friend is hit home really well. Thank you Jon. We have so few engaging tools in our arsenal to help kids with this issue. The NH3 video I had the opportunity to share with my students today hit the nail on the head. I am grateful for the opportunity to use it."
