Interesting Natural High: Sewing!

Meet Sara Trail, a 14-year-old entrepreneur and master of the sewing craft. She has already started her very own clothing and accessory design business. It all began at the age of 4 when her mom guided her through stitching her first quilt. She gives God and several adult mentors, including mom, the credit for her early-developed talent. Create & Treasure (C&T) Publishing is known for showcasing the best of the best in the quilting industry.

Sara definitely falls in the category of inspiring artisans. She began teaching sewing at her church when she was 9 years old. She also helps foster children learn to sew. Janome, a sewing machine manufacturer, agreed to donate machines for after school programs due to Sara?s persuasive influence. Her motivation for teaching sewing is to help kids learn a skill that will benefit them as adults. Sara's natural high is unstoppable - it is rumored that once she caught the sewing bug, her parents shut off the power in their house one time to prevent her from sewing all night long! Growing Green in Urban Buffalo

The Growing Green Program, hosted by Massachusetts Avenue Project (MAP), is an organic agricultural training program for low-income, at-risk youth in the community of Buffalo, New York.  Community outreach efforts involve hands-on activities in MAP'S award-winning gardens, shared use of a commercial kitchen, after-school workshops, and interaction with local students to encourage positive social change and environmental awareness. MAP's most recent contribution to Buffalo is a fruit and veggie delivery service. Maybe it's not competition for the ice cream man, but neighbors certainly welcomed the convenience at dinner time! Natural High recently asked one of your peers... In your opinion, are teens wise with managing and spending their money? Why or Why not? What can be said or done to help them?

" I think that most teens are not very educated and wise with managing their money. I think teens are just starting to reach the stage where they become more independent with their money, while in the past they'd relied on their parents to help them. It's important as you get older to be able to manage your finances, because in college and beyond you'll need to be able to take care of yourself. You can talk to your parents and help them set up a monthly budget for yourself so that you can manage your spending habits. Many banks, such as Wells Fargo, also have a teen checking program that you can check out." ~ Anonymous Student Journalist

NH4 Celeb Recap: Relient K

Fans of Green Day, MXPX, The All-American Rejects, Jimmy Eat World, and Simple Plan: listen up. Relient K is a band you may or may not have heard of, but is definitely a force to be reckoned with. Relient K is an indie Christian rock band that was formed in 1998. Since then, they have released eight albums, their most recent entitiled "The Bird and the Bee Sides". Matt Thiessen is currently their lead vocalist, with Matt Hoopes as guitarist, John Warne as bassist, Jon Schneck on the guitar and bangos, and Ethan Luck on the drums. Relient K has toured with bands such as Good Charlotte and Simple Plan, and has appeared on television many times on shows like "the Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and MTV's "TRL". The band's name actually came from Matt Hoopes' car, a Plymouth Reliant K. Relient K's songs are filled with their punkish sense of humor, such as the popular "Sadie Hawkins Dance" and "Maybe Its Maybelline." Read On.
