A Peer's Perspective on Michael Phelps

This month our student writer answered a question on a lot of our minds recently: What were your initial thoughts and feelings after hearing that Michael Phelps, an amazing athlete and Olympic gold medalist, was recently caught smoking marijuana?

"I personally was shocked when I heard that Michael Phelps was caught smoking marijuana. He was an amazing athlete in the Olympics; I never expected him to jeopardize his career in this way. Michael is a role model to many aspiring athletes and teenagers all over the world, and I feel that this incident will definitely have an effect on how people think of him. Michael's passion was swimming, but it wasn't his natural high. A passion is something someone enjoys doing, but a natural high is a passion you consciously choose to do over drugs. Many celebrities today are photographed doing drugs, partying, and drinking alcohol, but I believe they use it for publicity. If a teen is caught doing drugs, they can suffer even more life-altering consequences than celebrities like Michael. Michael getting busted for pot was a wake-up call for everyone. This incident showed everyone that while you may be able to get away with substance abuse for a little while, you still suffer the consequences, no matter who you are."                    -Anonymous Student Journalist

Interesting Natural High: Base Jumping Bonus

You won¡¦t believe your eyes when you watch the newest spin on base jumping! It is a jaw dropping  sight to watch professional jumpers use their combined talents from skiing, base jumping and flying in wingsuits to obtain this amazing natural high.

Please be advised this is only for experts. So far there are few sights found to host these athletic stunts, however in the locations known, jumpers can reach up to speeds of 120mph wearing their specially designed suits, or squirrel suits as they are referred to sometimes. The fabric wings of these suits allow jumpers much control over their flight, so when mastered, the end result is an adrenaline pumping sport (and spectator sport at that).

JT Holmes, as seen in the short video describes the feeling he gets from gliding only meters away from cliffs: I don't know about Superman, but we certainly felt superhuman when we were on our Norwegian adventure. It felt like we were the masters of the mountain at that very moment which was an incredible rush.¨ For more information visit The Sun.

NH4: Paul Rodriguez

It is official: Paul Rodriguez is a part of our upcoming Natural High 4 volume!

Paul Rodriguez, or "P-Rod¨, is an intense pro skateboarder. He started skating at age 12, got his first sponsor when he was 14, and turned pro when he was 16. Now he¡¦s 24, and has accomplished many achievements in his career. In 2004 and 2005, Paul won gold in the street category at the X Games. He also took third in the park division at the Dew Tour in 2005. He made history in '04 by becoming the first pro skater to be signed by Nike, and later came out with his own signature shoes. He¡¦s appeared in his own skate video, The Forecast, as well as other skate videos and several Tony Hawk video games. Paul has already accomplished his dream, and he advises, I didn't skate to please anyone else. I started skating because I love to skate. You gotta watch out because there will come a point where you'll forget that.¨ (Skateboarder Mag, Sep. 2004

End of Year Stress Busters

As the school year gears up for the last stretch before summer, a lot of kids start to feel what I like to call "fourth-quarter crunchtime.¨ Teachers start piling on homework, tests and quizzes start appearing more often, and finals are coming closer. Use these tips to help when you feel completely overwhelmed:
    - Enjoy spring break! Take the opportunity to relax!
    -
Pick something you want to do (like watch a new

TV episode), and resolve not to do it until you
      finish an assignment.
    -
Put the books away and take a walk around the
block. Exercise is a great stress reliever.
    -
Be organized.
    - Talk to a friend or adult if you¡¦re feeling super
stressed. You¡¦ll feel better by talking about it.
    -
Plan an outing with friends at the end of a tough
      week

    -
Eat foods like oatmeal, oranges, avocados, pistachios, almonds, and walnuts,
which help relieve stress and its symptoms.
