"I hate it when famous people who have great talent throw their life away by doing drugs so when I saw that a lot more people are taking this seriously, it brought a smile to my face."

 Natural High 4: Paul Rodriguez

Dear Educator,

Congratulations to Heather Youngquist, a School Counselor in Richardson Texas! Heather is part of the Natural High Virtual Advisory Group and just won our contest for getting the most schools pre-registered for Natural High 4!

Last month we hosted a contest amongst our advisory group to see who get the most schools pre-registered. Heather ended up getting 28 schools pre-registered and winning $500 for herself plus a Natural High Prize Pack! When we asked Heather why she felt so motivated she replied, "I wanted to get my fellow counselors signed up for this because I feel that these are some of the most powerful, engaging videos that I have seen for our upper elementary kids. They are packed with celebrities that the kids know and admire and therefore they are interesting and exciting to them. These videos have a stronger impact on my kids than any other videos I have shown them. I love them and so do my students. They have a great message and it is presented in such an exciting way that it really inspires my students to stay drug free. Thanks for your great videos. Keep them coming. They are phenomenal!"

Now it's your turn to win! This month we are hosting another pre-reg contest, but this time amongst all our educators. The prize is the same, $500 for yourself, plus a Natural High Prize Pack that includes Natural High T-shirts, hats, key chains, and stickers. So start telling your colleagues and have them Pre-Register here, because the deadline is March 31st! To rack up credit for all those registrations, make sure to let your friends know they need fill out the "who referred you" box with your last name and school. To make things easy, send a simple blast to your contacts including the link! The race is on!

Joke of the Month

An eccentric philosophy professor gave a one question final exam after a semester dealing with a broad array of topics. The class was already seated and ready to go when the professor picked up his chair, plopped it on his desk and wrote on the board: "Using everything we have learned this semester, prove that this chair does not exist." Fingers flew, erasers erased, notebooks were filled in furious fashion. Some students wrote over 30 pages in one hour attempting to refute the existence of the chair. One member of the class however, was up and finished in less than a minute. Weeks later when the grades were posted, the rest of the group wondered how he could have gotten an "A" when he had barely written anything at all. His answer consisted of two words: "What chair?"

Natural High Program in England

Natural High is a universal message: All the way across the globe in Cambridgshire, England an organization named Natural High Experience stands to aid in adolescent drug prevention through the power of the arts. With over 12 years of working directly with kids, their success lies in involving each individual with his or her specific art of choice. The organization strives to reach out to those less fortunate in particular, help them find a natural high and in turn build on self esteem, confidence, and self expression. Check out their site devoted to some of the same core ideals as the Natural High DVD Series.

Voice in the Trenches; A Youth Perspective on Michael Phelps

This month our student writer answered a question on a lot of our minds recently: What were your initial thoughts and feelings after hearing that Michael Phelps, an amazing athlete and Olympic gold medalist, was recently caught smoking marijuana?

"I personally was shocked when I heard that Michael Phelps was caught smoking marijuana. He was an amazing athlete in the Olympics; I never expected him to jeopardize his career in this way. Michael is a role model to many aspiring athletes and teenagers all over the world, and I feel that this incident will definitely have an effect on how people think of him. Michael's passion was swimming, but it wasn't his natural high. A passion is something someone enjoys doing, but a natural high is a passion you consciously choose to do over drugs. Many celebrities today are photographed doing drugs, partying, and drinking alcohol, but I believe they use it for publicity. If a teen is caught doing drugs, they can suffer even more life-altering consequences than celebrities like Michael. Michael getting busted for pot was a wake-up call for everyone. This incident showed everyone that while you may be able to get away with substance abuse for a little while, you still suffer the consequences, no matter who you are."                         -Anonymous Student Journalist

Natural High 4: Paul Rodriguez

It is official: Paul Rodriguez is a part of our upcoming Natural High 4 volume!

Paul Rodriguez, or "P-Rod", is an intense pro skateboarder. He started skating at age 12, got his first sponsor when he was 14, and turned pro when he was 16. Now he's 24, and has accomplished many achievements in his career. In 2004 and 2005, Paul won gold in the street category at the X Games. He also took third in the park division at the Dew Tour in 2005. He made history in '04 by becoming the first pro skater to be signed by Nike, and later came out with his own signature shoes. He's appeared in his own skate video, The Forecast, as well as other skate videos and several Tony Hawk video games. Paul has already accomplished his dream, and he advises, "I didn't skate to please anyone else. I started skating because I love to skate. You gotta watch out because there will come a point where you'll forget that." (Skateboarder Mag, Sep. 2004)

"I have been a school counselor for 13 years, and this is the first time I have shown a video that captured every student?s attention for the duration of the video. It also captured the attention of the teachers, who had planned on getting paperwork done but couldn't take their eyes of the video! They had many, many compliments also. I?m never tired of watching it even though I watched it 28 times in 4 days."   -Steve Pitkin, Lake Stevens High School, WA
