Voice in the Trenches, a Youth Perspective

Natural High 4 Talent Showcase - Genevieve Cortese

Dear Educator,

We have added a new section to Natural High News called, "Voice in the Trenches, a Youth Perspective". This section is written from a student attending a typical high school in Southern California. Her Natural Highs are soccer, writing, and journalism so this a great opportunity for her to put her skills and passions towards good use! We will be asking our student to share her perspective on substance abuse, natural highs and the media every month so stay tuned to hear what her and her buddies have to say. The student has wished to remain anonymous however if you have a question you would like to ask her please send us an email at info@naturalhigh.org

The task of the excellent teacher is to stimulate "apparently ordinary" people to unusual effort.  The tough problem is not in identifying winners:  it is in making winners out of ordinary people.  ~K. Patricia Cross

Oxycodone, Coming to a School Near You

In May 2008, detectives from the South East Narcotics Team (SENT) began to see a rise in the abuse of Oxycodone. Looking closely at one case, an officer advised, "make no mistake about it, this one kid represents the story of thousands of others around our county, and for the first time in my 19 years as a cop I'm scared for my kids and yours!"

Oxycodone, also commonly refereed to as OxyContin, Percocet, Percodan, and Tylox, is an opiate that is prescribed for moderate to high pain relief. Most individuals who abuse Oxycodone seek to gain euphoric effects, mitigate pain, and avoid withdrawal symptoms associated with Oxycodone or heroin abstinence. Abusers interviewed say the pills help them escape the pressures of school, nagging parents, nagging teachers, household chores, etc. Abusers believe by "popping" four or five Vicodin or chewing one or two Vicodin, all of their problems are solved for a few hours.

While conducting OxyContin investigations in specific areas, detectives found one common theme: "Lots of people, are selling lots of Oxy, to lots of kids." Teenagers and young adults between the ages of 17 and 25 are buying OxyContin where ever they can get it and paying between $50 and $80 per pill. During interviews with numerous young adults, detectives quickly become educated with the increasing dangers of OxyContin abuse. Voice in the Trenches, a Youth Perspective

We asked Megan, what is the top thing adults should know about drug use amongst young people your age?

"The top thing adults should know about drug use amongst young people my age is that it is definitely out there. Parents don't seem to realize how prevalent it is in our lives, and how common it has become. They need to be aware that drugs are a part of their child?s daily life. Adults need to know the wide range of drug use and abuse that exists today. In addition to drugs such as marijuana, kids are now taking prescription drugs and even smoking prescription drugs. Parents also need to know that their children face pressure to drink or do drugs and be "cool." By knowing what their child is facing, parents can help them make smart decisions in their life."

Natural High 4 Talent Showcase - Genevieve Cortese

At age 28, Genevieve Cortese has already made numerous appearances as an actress. Genevieve currently stars as Kris in the ABC Family show "Wildfire" and frequently makes appearances on the CW's "Supernatural" as Ruby. Genevieve graduated from the Tisch School of the Arts New York University with a bachelor of fine arts degree in drama and a bachelor of arts in English. She loves surfing, snowboarding, and especially playing soccer. Genevieve also likes to travel and spend time with friends and family, but she dislikes driving and when people talk on their cell phones in public. Acting is her natural high because, "I love the possibility that anything can happen in any moment with acting. That you have the opportunity to experience lives and adventures that you may not have otherwise."
