Student Testimonial
"I learned that if you just start with cigarettes or weed you will most likely go to more drugs that are worse. I liked how you put athletes talking about how drugs can change your life. They could have been on a whole different road than where they are now."
- Jonathan Mulcahey, Student Marshwood Middle School

With the addition of one new staff member, we finally have the capabilities to orchestrate with local outreach opportunities to further our message and resources to educators, parents and students alike. We encourage you to read about 420 Remix and Cinco De Mayo - Celebrate with Dignity, two events we recently participated in.

This event is put on the by the Palomar Pomerado Health Committee on Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs (ATOD) and is packed with useful resources, tools, and information for teaching on the prevalent problem of prescription drug abuse. Over 1000 People Attend 420 Remix Event

Last month the Sundt Memorial Foundation joined the North Coastal Prevention Coalition to host their 420 Remix Event designed to take back the unofficial pot smoker's holiday;4/20 from the marijuana smoking subculture. For the truth behind 10 popular misperceptions regarding Marijuana click here for resources. Aaron Byzak, Policy Adviser for Health and Human Services, said, "Our 420 Remix event demonstrated that everyone can have fun in a sober and drug free environment.  People of all ages enjoyed the music, booths, food, educational materials, and activities that the event offered and walked away from the event empowered to make healthy life choices." SMF hosted a Natural High booth where we passed out free copies of our latest DVD, Natural High 3 amidst the rocking tunes of up and coming artists; Los Oliver, The Duree, The Funky Kicks, The Leventhour, and Vanity Affair. We also raffled off a signed Tony Hawk Skate Deck and gear won by Marshall Sowko (in picture). The Foundation was thrilled to be a part of this prevention outreach and looks forward to participating in it annually.

Cinco De Mayo - Celebrate with Dignity Event

The Sundt Memorial Foundation had the opportunity to be part of yet another anti-substance abuse celebration in City Heights on Friday, May 2, 2008. The Cinco de Mayo con Orgullo Festival is a campaign effort to stop the exploitation of the Cinco de Mayo holiday by the alcohol and tobacco industries. The Coalition promotes the true meaning and significance of the holiday and the Latino culture by sponsoring alcohol and tobacco free events.

Admission was free and the event featured Aztec Dancers, Mariachis, Resource Booths, Ballet Folklorico, delicious Mexican food, and a fun zone for children and youth. The Sundt Memorial Foundation again set up a Natural High booth, where we passed out free copies of Natural High 3, and raffled off a $100 Apple Gift Card for those who signed up for more information.

Party Prevention on Prom Night

More than one-third of youth under the age of 21 killed in alcohol-related fatalities in 2001 died during the months of April, May and June - prom and graduation season - according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Heightened focus on fighting underage drinking, particularly at prom-graduation time, is critical. A young girl by the name of Kylee Darcy, came up with a targeted PSA campaign to combat this behavior and address the realistic social consequences of drinking. Here are some additional resources for Educators from The Century Council, a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting drunk driving and underage drinking. To read full article click here.

"Sudden Fall" for Numerous Students at SDSU Campus

On Tuesday, May 6th 18 students were arrested on San Diego State?s Campus for drug trafficking, selling and possession charges. The amount of students is continuously changing as new leads stem from further investigations.  Many news stations have broad casted higher numbers such as 75-100+ total students arrested. Please note that these higher numbers reflect total students arrested by SDSU police on or around the campus since January 2008.

The undercover investigation, ?Sudden Fall?, was launched by the school and started after the overdose and death of SDSU student, Shirley "Jenny" Poliakoff, about a year ago. As this news story continues to unfold, make sure you know the current facts to respond to your students questioning. Watch this video or visit this F.A.Q. page on SDSU?s website for the most recent updates and statements.

"I am so appreciative of the work you and your foundation have done in producing the Natural High video series. I use them every year with my students. I recently discovered the discussion guides available through this website and was impressed with the way the questions prompt students to think at a higher level."  ~ Sandy Bresnick, Teacher, Wilde Lake Middle School
