Costas Lyssiotis

This October, in recognition of breast cancer awareness month, we highlight Costas A. Lyssiotis, PhD, the Amgen Fellow of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. Costas studies cancer cell metabolism at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts.

Costas received undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Biochemistry from the University of Michigan. While pursuing a PhD degree in Chemical Biology at The Scripps Research Institute, he worked on identifying and characterizing chemicals that reprogram cell fate. After the wife of a close friend and colleague was diagnosed with breast cancer, Costas decided to focus on breast cancer research for his post-doctorate fellowship.

As a Damon Runyon Fellow, Costas researches the differences in cellular metabolism between cancer cells and healthy cells. Unlike healthy cell metabolism, cancer cell metabolism appears to be rewired to allow for continuous proliferation and tumor growth. Costas aims to determine how breast cancer cells reprogram their metabolic networks to support tumor formation and metastasis. His studies have the potential to provide new targeted therapies for breast cancer, as well as other types of cancer.
