World Education & Development Fund hosted its inaugural black tie gala dinner on 9 June 2004 at The Plaza in New York City. Carlos Slim was recognized for his generosity and commitment to the education of underprivileged children in Latin America, as well as his extraordinary business leadership in the region. Mr. Slim was accompanied to the dinner by 30 family members and close friends, including his six children and spouses.

The dinner remarks opened with an introduction by World Education & Development Fund Executive Director, Luanne Zurlo, followed by a video presentation describing WEDF's activities and the schools that it supports. Mano Amiga alumna, Ana Garcia, delivered a powerful, emotional testimony describing how Mano Amiga changed her life, inspiring a standing ovation by dinner guests (see article).

Citigroup Chairman, Sanford Weill, brilliantly followed this tough act with a heartfelt salute to Carlos Slim. Mano Amiga founder, Fr. Marcel Maciel, LC, delivered another powerful and emotional speech about the importance of education to a person's development and a testimony to the generosity of Carlos Slim and his deceased wife. The evening's remarks concluded with the honoree, himself, Carlos Slim, who gave a powerful talk about the importance of education and the obligation of those with means to support our next generation.
