Transforming the lives of accomplished high school students from low-income families by broadening their dreams and preparing them for college success.
|Celebrating 20 years, Minds Matter continues to level the higher-education playing field for hundreds of high-achieving, low-income high-school students. As the educational achievement gap in the U.S. persists, Minds Matter is making college access a reality for these students through its dynamic academic programming and innovative mentoring approach.|
Minds Matter students are bright, with limitless potential and ambition to pursue a college education, but they lack something very important: the resources necessary to get there. Our mission is modest yet profound: to transform the lives of accomplished high school students from low-income families by broadening their dreams and preparing them for college success. Twenty years ago, Minds Matter started up in New York City with just a handful of students and volunteers. Today, our reach has expanded considerably.
In the 2010-2011 school year, we served a total of 321 students in nine cities across the country, engaging more than 1,100 volunteers as mentors and instructors. Our sophomores, juniors and seniorsómany of whom are the first in their families to pursue higher educationóbenefit from a comprehensive three-year curriculum that focuses on three areas crucial to academic success. The Writing & Critical Thinking program pairs students with advisers who help them improve their writing, analytic and public speaking skills. In the Math Matters program, instructors work with students in small groups to strengthen quantitative skills. Instructors in the Test Prep program get students ready to take the SAT or ACT, helping them assess which of those tests is best suited to them.
On top of all this, each student has two dedicated, caring mentors guiding them through the process of applying to summer academic programs and, ultimately, to college. When you couple the intelligence and drive of Minds Matter students with the strong support system we provide, it is not difficult to see why 100% of our seniors gain acceptance to and attend four-year colleges.
