Paws for the Cause Ambassador: Debbie Nemshick & Teddy
In 2004, I was diagnosed with papillary and follicular thyroid cancer at the age of 39. That same year I lost my dad to thyroid cancer and my sister was also diagnosed. I was referred to Dr. John Ridge, an expert in head and neck cancer at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
In the ten years since my diagnosis, I have been blessed to meet so many talented and caring people at Fox Chase who are dedicated to treating not just the cancer but the whole patient who is living and surviving with cancer.
When I was recovering from surgery and going through treatment, my dogs Sebastian and Dunkin provided so much comfort to me. They cuddled next to me when I wasn't feeling well and it became clear that our pets have a role in helping cancer patients recover. When I heard about Paws for the Cause several years ago, I was excited to attend and show my support but also share the connection with other patients and survivors who have received so much love from their dogs as they went through their cancer journey.
This year, I have the pleasure to introduce my new puppy Teddy to the Fox Chase family as we walk in support of cancer research.
We hope you and your pets will join us on Sunday, October 5, 2014 at Fox Chase Cancer Center for the annual Paws for the Cause charity dog-walk. Each year hundreds of dogs and their owners make their way to Fox Chase’s campus for this event and to pitch in on the effort to prevail over cancer. Participants enjoy a great one-mile walk, participate in contests to win great prizes, and more than anything, spend quality time with their four-legged friends.
