Youth Honoree – Morgan, Age 13
“ Morgan was diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis in both of her knees and left ankle in December 2012. Her symptoms began that summer when she returned home from camp and felt a sharp pain in her knees and left ankle which then began to swell and feel hot.
Since then, as her family has worked to find effective treatments Morgan has coped with difficulty with walking and bending down along with flare-ups that include swelling, hot joints, and psoriatic patches. Recently, Morgan’s treatment plan and medications have prevented flare-ups and she is almost in remission.
“I never let my diagnosis stop me from doing what I love. In the beginning of my treatment process, I went to physical therapy twice a week to gain back some of the strength in my joints. After six months, you could see improvement. I also continue going to school and I keep an A average in all of my classes. During the summer, I go to overnight camp where I play sports and walk a lot every day.”
Once Morgan learned about the Arthritis Foundation, she found it reassuring to know there were other people that were experiencing the same thing as her.
In November 2013, Morgan celebrated her Bat Mitzvah and wanted to give back to a charity that she could relate to. When she found out about the Jingle Bell Run/Walk, she thought it would be perfect! She formed a team of family and friends and asked people to donate money and/or walk for her cause. She raised over $3,000 and looks forward to this year’s event!
“I look forward to raising money and helping others by our contributions. It would be amazing to find new medical treatments and cures for arthritis. I am honored to be chosen as this year’s Youth Honoree. I hope to be able to show others that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to. I believe obstacles are simply challenges to be worked around and I believe I can meet any challenge!”
