Team Spotlight: Team Akins

Mitchell OswaldPlease meet Josh Akins. Josh Akins never knew much about joint pain or arthritis. He maintained an active lifestyle with his wife and three kids.

After starting an intense Cross Fit work out regime, Josh thought he had simply injured his shoulder. After numerous doctor’s visits, testing revealed that Josh had rheumatoid arthritis. At the age of 36, Josh saw his active lifestyle quickly diminishing. He immediately began taking an anti-metabolite in addition to an anti-inflammatory. Unfortunately this combination of medications was not enough. Five months after this diagnosis, he began taking an injectable biologic drug. The difference for him was night and day. Within a month he was able to resume a modified Cross Fit program and eliminated things that are too painful to do, like jumps, pushups and boxing.

Through the support of his wife, he got involved with the Arthritis Foundation in Tulsa. They attended the Commitment to a Cure event in November and formed a team for Jingle Bell Run. With the new combination of medications, Josh feels better every day. He knows the medications are working and has not suffered from any major flare ups.

Thank you for participating in the 2013 Tulsa Arthritis Walk, the signature fundraising event for the Arthritis Foundation. Every year, people across the country move together to celebrate those who are making a positive impact on the lives of people living with arthritis.

More than just an event, Arthritis Walk is a celebration of year-round movement. It is building awareness for this debilitating disease and raising necessary funds to drive arthritis research, education and life improvement programs; it also continues the Arthritis Foundation’s search to find a cure to the nation’s leading cause of disability.
