Awards - 1st through 3rd in each 5K/10K age/sex division will be awarded, as well as 1st-3rd 5K/10K overall. The 5K/10K events are both measured and officiated by SC Runners. The top fundraiser overall will receive an award.
Success In 2011
Another successful event! The 10th Annual Fight It! 5K/10K/1K took place on May 14, 2011, at Central Park in Santa Clarita allowing the Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund to continue their amazing cause. We had 383 participants, 70 joining us in our first 10K Race, and raised a combined total of over $20,000. Thanks to everyone, the BMCF was able to re-open their grant program to help more patients.
Produced by JCI Santa Clarita Valley (The Jaycees), this event is the Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund's largest annual fundraiser. This 10K/5K/1K race and walk-a-thon is open to walkers and runners of all abilities…and their canine companions, too! This is a cross country trail so those runners who appreciate a break from pounding their joints on concrete and asphalt will love this race.
Race Beneficiary
The Brenda Mehling Cancer Fund (BMCF) supports patients 18-40 years old, currently undergoing cancer treatment. It covers services to meet daily needs, such as home health care services, co-payments, temporary housing, rent, insurance, and food. The goal of Brenda’s Fund is to help young adults in treatment maintain self-respect and minimize the stress of associated financial challenges.
Brenda was diagnosed with breast cancer in her late twenties, when she realized that the health care system was not equipped to meet many patients' day-to-day needs through months of treatment. As members of JCI Santa Clarita, Brenda and Kieran Wong founded the BMCF in February 2001. Since then it has helped 406 recipients, providing over $271,500 in support services. In February 2004, Brenda lost her second battle against cancer. However, the Fund and JCI Santa Clarita continue to realize her vision.
