Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa's mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-to-one relationships that change their lives for the better, forever.
A Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Iowa match is carefully administered and supported by rigorous standards and trained personnel. Agency professionals strive for matches that are not only safe and well-suited to each child, but also harmonious and built to last.
Our Core Programs
We're flexibleyou can be a Big in many different ways. Bigs and Littles get together in a variety of locations, at different times of day, and share in a multitude of activities. You choose what works for you.
School Based Mentoring allows individuals, high school age or older, to meet one-to-one with a Little at the child's elementary or middle school for 30-60 minutes each week before, during or after school. Volunteers commit to a full academic year of mentoring. Matches spend time reading, doing homework or just talking; all while building a relationship and increasing the child's self confidence and academic performance.
School Based Plus is an extension of our School Based Mentoringthe only difference is, Bigs and Littles have the opportunity to meet once a month outside of the school setting. Mentors must be at least 18 years old and the match must be together for three or more months.
Community Based Mentoring allows individuals who are 18 or older to visit with a child twice a month for a minimum of four hours a month. Bigs spend time with their Littles participating in activities throughout the community. Whether it's going to the zoo, playing catch or just taking a walk, the possibilities are endless. The great part is that with every activity, a friendship grows. We also provide options for individuals to be Community Based Mentors in pairs Big Duos or Big Family.
Our Programs Start Something
Here's the proof. National research has shown that positive relationships between Littles and their Bigs have a direct and measurable impact on children's lives. By participating in our programs, Little Brothers and Sisters are:
more confident in their schoolwork performance
able to get along better with their families
46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs
27% less likely to begin using alcohol
52% less likely to skip school.
Your contributions to the 2012 Hy-Vee Fishing Derby, whether it's your time or a monetary donation, helps to make these programs possible.
