Event Logistics
  • What date is the walk?  Saturday, September 29, 2012.

  • When should I arrive/check-in?  Check-in will open at 11:30 PM. The resource fair will open at 12 PM and the formal program featuring speakers and  musical performances will begin at 1 PM. The Walk will begin around 2:15 PM.

  • What do I do if I am late?  If you are late and the walk has already started, you should still check-in and then you can follow the map and complete the walk or you can partake in the other activities.

  • When will I be done?  The event will have featured speakers and performers beginning at 1 PM. The Walk will begin around 2:15 PM and should last about 45 minutes.

  • Can children participate for free?  Yes, children 13 and under can participate for free.  **Please note: Children MUST register for this event. Child registrations are free**

  • What happens if it rains?  The walk will take place rain or shine so please dress accordingly.

  • What is the closest Metro stop?

Blue/Orange: Federal Triangle
Red: Metro Center
Yellow/Green:Archives

Directions from Federal Triangle:

    • Exit the metro station and head south on 12th Street toward Constitution Avenue
    • Turn right onto Constitution Ave
    • Walk 3 blocks west on Constitution Ave
    • Registration will be at the corner of Constitution Ave NW & 15th St NW
Directions from Metro Center:

    • Exit the Metro Center station using the 13th St & G St exit
    • Turn right on G St. and head west towards 15th St
    • Turn left on 15th St and continue until you reach Constitution Ave
    • Registration will be at the corner of Constitution Ave NW & 15th St NW
Directions from Archives:

    • Exit the the Archives Metro Station and head south on 7th St towards Constitution Ave NW
    • Turn right on Constitution Ave NW
    • Walk approx. 6 blocks West on Constitution Ave NW
    • Registration will be at the corner of Constitution Ave NW & 15th St NW
  • Is there parking nearby?  There is minimal street parking and few garages within walking distance.  We highly encourage utilizing public transportation.

  • How long is the walk?  The walk is approximately one mile long.

  • How do I redeem my Living Social/Amazon Local voucher? If you've purchased a Living Social or Amazon Local deal, all you will need to do is bring the voucher with you to the Walk. However, if you'd like to be added to a team or create your own team, please email walk@stopmodernslavery.org with the following information: 1) Name and Email Address 2) Registration Level 3) Team Name 4) T-shirt size.

Getting Involved

  • How do I register for the walk?  Is there a fee?  To register, click on the big red "Register" button at the top of this page.  There is a registration fee that varies based on the level at which you register. Please see the "Event Logistics" tab for full registration and pricing details.

  • Can I volunteer on the day of the walk?  The Stop Modern Slavery Walk is organized entirely by volunteers.  There are volunteer opportunities for both before and during the day of the walk.  For more information and to get involved, please email Anna Nehring at anehring@stopmodernslavery.org.

  • Who are the Walk beneficiaries?  All official walk beneficiaries are non-profit organizations that combat human trafficking or provide services for victims/survivors.  These partner organizations are the main recipients of the proceeds from walk.  They also contribute to the success of the walk in various ways such as recruiting walkers, donating money to help cover costs, sending volunteers, donating goods, and promoting the walk.

  • After I register for the walk, will my contact information be shared with anyone else? No, all personal information of walk registrants will be kept private and will not be shared with any external parties.  We will only use walk registrant contact information to contact walkers about walk-related matters.

  • When is the last day that I can register for the walk? You can register for the walk up until Friday, 9/28 at 10 PM.  Day of registrations will not be available.


Donations & Sponsorship
  • Is my registration fee or donation tax deductible? DC Stop Modern Slavery is a chapter within the Stop Modern Slavery network of community organizations. Stop Modern Slavery is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, and is eligible to receive charitable donations that are deductible for U.S. income tax purposes. Our federal taxpayer identification number is 26-3865932. Donations are tax deductible. Your registration fee is NOT tax deductible.

  • Where are the donations going? This event is organized by community volunteers of DC Stop Modern Slavery (DC SMS).  After the costs of the walk are paid, 100% of the remaining contributions will go directly to non-profit organizations working to combat human trafficking and/or care for victims.  Last year's walk raised more than $100,000. 

  • How will my donation help the cause? Your donations will help:

    • Provide emergency, short-term, and long-term care and services for victims of human trafficking
    • Operate the national human trafficking hotline that handles tips of potential human trafficking situations, provides general information to the public, and offers training and technical assistance
    • Train law enforcement to identify victims and implement laws effectively
    • Rescue victims of human trafficking
    • Raise awareness about human trafficking

  • How can my organization become a sponsor of this event?  If you are interested in becoming a sponsor or have any questions, please contact Brian Salerni at bsalerni@stopmodernslavery.org.

  • When is the last day to donate to the walk? Donations will be accepted until December 1, 2012.

  • Can I make donations at the walk? Can I use cash/check/credit card? Yes, you will be able to make donation at the walk with cash or check.  

  • Why am I getting an error message with my credit card? Please make sure you enter your billing address when using a credit card. If you have still have problems, please contact walk@stopmodernslavery.org

  • Is fundraising mandatory?  Can I walk if I haven't raised any money?  Fundraising is not mandatory and you can still participate in the walk if you haven't raised any money.  However, the nominal registration fees are necessary to cover the costs of the walk.  We do encourage you to seek donations from your friends, families, and colleagues to help combat human trafficking and modern slavery.

  • I donated online but the counter has not been updated to reflect my donation.  There is a brief 10 minute lag between the time you donate online and when the counter updates. If your donation is still not showing up, please email walk@stopmodernslavery.org to confirm that the transaction went through.

  • Is Kintera a partner?  Why am I directed to their website?  Kintera is only the registration and fundraising software.  They are not a partner of the walk.

Day of Event Information
  • Where will I sign in?  Registration will be at the entrance near 15th Street and Constitution Avenue. Please see map above under metro directions.

  • Do I need a form of ID to sign in? Only participants wishing to register as a student or military will need to present a student or military ID at check-in.

  • Can I register to participate on the day of the walk? We encourage participants to register in advance as we will not be able to accept official registrations on the day of the walk due to National Park Services guidelines.  However, those who wish to participate but do not register in advance may still attend and donations will be accepted.

  • Is the walk handicap/stroller accessible?  Yes, the entire walk is handicap and stroller accessible.

  • Is there a lost and found?  Yes, the lost and found will be at the information tent.

  • Will food or water be provided?  Walkers are welcome to bring lunch and a blanket to enjoy our speakers and performers. There are plenty of lunch options in the area for after the event.  Food trucks and other food carts will be available around the 15th and Constitution intersection.

  • Are dogs allowed?  Yes, dogs are welcome to participate in the "Animals Against Human Trafficking" walk.  Please respect our parks - dogs must be vaccinated, leashed, and picked up after.

  • What if I don't want to walk?  Are there other activities?  A family activity area and resource fair will be set up by NGOs with material to help you and your family learn about modern day slavery.  You can also bring a blanket and enjoy speakers and entertainers.
