Join me in my efforts to support the National Down Syndrome Society

Four years ago, we welcomed our daughter Nella into our family and learned upon her arrival that she had Down syndrome. We were shocked and saddened by the challenges we knew she’d face, many of those concerns growing out of a common hope we share with any parent—that our child will be accepted and seen for her abilities and character rather than what makes her different. What a learning experience these past four years have been—and we’ve only just begun.

This year, we celebrate Nella’s fourth birthday. We have chosen to continue to support the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) in their goal of raising awareness and creating opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome and their families to live their best life possible. The National Down Syndrome Society has been dedicated to making a marked difference for people with Down syndrome since 1979. NDSS is the national advocate for the value, acceptance and inclusion of people with Down syndrome. NDSS envisions a world in which all people with Down syndrome have the opportunity to enhance their quality of life, realize their life aspirations and become valued members of welcoming communities.

Since Nella’s first birthday, we have launched an annual campaign to raise funds and awareness in celebration of the day she came into our lives. With your help, we’ve raised nearly $237,000 for the National Down Syndrome Society. We are eternally grateful for your support and, on behalf of Nella and the more than 400,000 individuals with Down syndrome living in the United States, we thank you. We are dedicated to sharing what we’ve learned and moving forward with our goal to change stereotypes, raise awareness and multiply the number of opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome to lead a fulfilling life.

This year, in honor of our daughter’s fourth birthday, we’re launching the Pay It 4Ward Celebration. Please join us by spreading the word and consider making a donation to NDSS. In addition, we’re asking you to find ways to get involved in your community. It might be as simple as learning the name of an individual with Down syndrome who works at a coffee shop you frequent and making it a point to get to know him. You can pledge to take part in your community’s Buddy Walk® this year, donate a special service to a local special needs group or recognize organizations that practice inclusion by telling them that you appreciate it.

Share the ways you are making a difference by using the hashtag #payingit4ward on social media.

We join thousands of others in proactively seeking ways we can increase knowledge and awareness about the amazing abilities of individuals with Down syndrome. Your tax-deductible donation will benefit people with Down syndrome and their families. Our family sincerely thanks you for joining us as we continue our efforts to give back.

Kindly, The Hampton Family
