About PetSmart Charities
PetSmart Charities creates and supports programs that saves lives of homeless pets and promote healthy relationships between people and pets. Our vision is a lifelong, loving home for every pet. PetSmart Charities and its adoption partners have saved the lives of more than 3.3 million pets through the PetSmart Charities Adoption Centers in each PetSmart store.
Since inception, PetSmart Charities has invested more than $70 million in animal welfare programs, including adoption programs, spay/neuter initiatives, life-saving transport work, education for animal welfare professionals and emergency relief.
Here are just some of the highlights of our recent accomplishments:
- In fall 2007, PetSmart Charities announced its pledge of $5 Million over 5 years to help the Texas cities of Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio increase spay/neuter in their communities. Our goal: increase the investment to $10 million by leveraging equal support from private donors, corporations and other foundations. It is expected by the end of the 5-year term over 500,000 surgeries will have been performed as a result of this initiative.
- Total Grant and Program expenditures for 2007 were $13,820,870.
- Less than ten cents of every donation dollar raised was spent on fundraising and management expenses.
- We deployed the Emergency Relief Waggin'® five times in 2007/2008 to assist with natural and man-made disasters: the California wildfires, a Virginia puppy mill rescue, a North Carolina shelter closure, an Arizona puppy mill/hoarding rescue as well as most recently to the floods in Iowa.
- The Rescue Waggin'® statistics grew to a total of more than 20,000 dogs that have been transported since its inception in 2004. These dogs were moved from overcrowded shelters where they had little chance of adoption, to shelters in need of adoptable dogs, where they could find loving homes.
In spite of the millions of faithful pet parents, an estimated 3-4 million pets are euthanized each year for lack of a life-long, loving home. PetSmart Charities is working with animal welfare agencies across North America to lower this number each year so our vision can be achieved.
