Dana-Farber Leadership Council

February 2012

Table of Contents:
A Message from your Co-Chairs

On behalf of the entire Dana-Farber Leadership Council and the staff at Dana-Farber and the Jimmy Fund, thank you for making 2011 an incredibly successful year!

Over the last twelve months you thoughtfully volunteered time, excitedly attended events, and most importantly generously contributed to Dana-Farber's lifesaving mission. As a Council, we welcomed 13 new members and through our collective efforts, raised an astounding $514,000 for research and patient care at Dana-Farber. We continue to raise more and more each year and are proud to have surpassed the half million dollar mark in 2011!

We look forward to celebrating our 2011 successes and sharing our 2012 goals at the Winter Gathering on February 23 at John Hancock.

All the best,

Jeff Goldstein & Russell Norris

New Member Spotlight

J.W. Craig
Place of birth: Staten Island, NY
I attended: Gettysburg College
Currently reside in: Boston, Mass.
Workplace: Breckinridge Capital Advisors, Vice President
Favorite Boston Restaurant: Fiore or Hillstone Restaurant
If I am not working I am most likely: Enjoying a wine tasting, playing a round of golf (what little time the New England weather allows), spending time with my nieces and nephew, and, of course, attending various DFLC events!
I joined DFLC because: My mother received fantastic care at Dana-Farber during her fight. What truly seems to set Dana-Farber apart is, along with the care that patients receive, the courtesies extended to family members are above and beyond. For all that they do, Dana-Farber is a key organization I want to support. Being a member of the Council provides me with a way to contribute and honor my mother's memory, while working with outstanding, enthusiastic people within the Boston community who are dedicated to furthering Dana-Farber's mission and supporting it's phenomenal efforts in cancer care and research.

Events in Review

Social Gathering
September 15, 2011

On September 15, more than 70 DFLC members and guests attended the Social Gathering, hosted by DFLC members Debra Drapella and Jeff Beale at Webster Bank. The evening provided an opportunity for prospective DFLC members to network with current members. Thank you to Chuck Winer, a Dana-Farber patient who shared his own personal story, and to all who heard the call to action that evening and made a gift to Dana-Farber–the evening raised more than $35,000! Thank you as well to guests who donated a new DVD for patients to watch during their treatments.

Fall GatheringSeptember 22, 2011
On September 22, 2011, guests gathered at Dana-Farber's Yawkey Center for the Fall Gathering. Laura MacConaill, PhD, scientific director of the Center for Cancer Genome Discovery, discussed Dana-Farber's new Personalized Cancer Medicine Partnership (PCMP), a collaborative venture between
Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. MacConaill shared an overview of how the Center develops new technologies for the analysis of cancer genomes and provides access to these technologies to investigators at Dana-Farber.

Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Brigham and Women's Hospital have launched Profile, one of the most comprehensive cancer research studies available to help accelerate the development of personalized treatments for every person with cancer.

The study will provide researchers with one of the world's largest databases of cancer genetic abnormalities. Over time, this growing body of information will help scientists discover more about the genetic causes of cancers and increase the development of new, targeted therapies to treat them. Key leaders of the new genetic-screening research program include Dana-Farber's CSO Barrett Rollins, MD, PhD, and Janiana Longtine, MD, of Brigham and Women's Hospital, pictured above.
