The Louisiana Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, Lafayette area will hold its annual Dementia Care Conference, A Meeting of the Minds, on May 1, 2009, 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at South Louisiana Community College .
Professionals are invited to learn about the latest care practices and research related to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, including a focus on staff development. Continuing education credits are available for RN's, Social Workers,Nursing Home Adminstrators, and Louisiana Professional Counselors. Registration is $70 for CEU-Professional attendees, $60 for those receiving a certificate of attendance, $40 for family caregivers and $25 for students with ID. The conference keynote speaker is Kathy Laurenhue, CEO of Wiser Now, Inc., named after her international, award-winning monthly newsletter for Alzheimer’s caregivers. She also produces the online subscription-based “Brain Aerobics Weekly.” Ms. Laurenhue is the author of three books: Alzheimer’s Basic Caregiving – an ABC Guide, Activities of Daily Living – an ADL Guide for Alzheimer’s Care, and Getting to Know the Life Stories of Older Adults: activities for building relationships. Ms. Laurenhue has her master’s degree in instructional technology and has developed multi-media learning materials and given presentations for many organizations throughout the US and Australia. Her inspiration comes from her ever-cheerful mother, who died of Alzheimer’s disease in 1996.
