Exercise is the best medicine!

The Arthritis Foundation Tai Chi Program is particularly effective for people with arthritis because it includes agile steps and exercises that may improve mobility, breathing and relaxation. This unique program is easy to learn, enjoyable, and provides many health benefits in a relatively short period of time. In addition, the movements have higher stances, which make them easier to learn. The program can be adapted to be done while standing or in a chair.

Program Structure

Tai Chi for Arthritis is based on Sun style tai chi. This style was chosen because of its healing component, its unique Qigong (an exercise which improves relaxation and vital energy), and its ability to improve mobility and balance. The program contains a carefully constructed set of warming-up and cooling-down exercises, Qigong breathing exercises, a Basic Core six movements, an Advanced Extension six movements, and adaptations of the movements for older adults. Also incorporated into the program is a safe and effective teaching system.

Click here for a video introduction to the program.

Benefits of the program may include:

- Reduced pain and stiffness

- Improved ability to cope with stress and depression

- Improved concentration and memory

- Improved balance and coordination

- Improved muscle strength and stamina

- Improved posture and biomechanics

- Increased circulation, heart and lung function

Workshop

The training will include classroom instruction and an exercise lab. Be prepared to practice the movements for several hours both days. A training manual and lunch, beverages and snacks will be provided. Wear comfortable clothes.
