Lutheran Social Services of Illinois. Bringing healing, justice, wholeness to people and communities.

October 13, 2011

Dear Friend of LSSI:

As part of our commitment to bringing wholeness to people and communities, I'm very excited to tell you about a new wellness program Lutheran Social Services of Illinois (LSSI) is offering to congregations. LifeBalanceSM is an 8-session program that focuses on wellness through shared faith.

Shared faith is at the heart of LSSI's mission: "Responding to the Gospel, bringing healing, justice and wholeness to people and communities." It's also at the heart of LifeBalance.

During the program, you'll have a special opportunity to reflect upon the physical, emotional, social, intellectual, vocational and financial aspects of your life, all from the perspective of your spiritual well-being.

A focus throughout the program is the John 5:1-6 passage where Jesus heals the sick man at pool of Bethesda. But before he heals him, Jesus asks a really tough question:  "Do you want to be made well?"

With this question, Jesus is essentially asking the man if he's ready to change his life. What will his new life mean? Change -- even positive change -- can be scary and challenging.

LifeBalance is designed to help participants build on their strengths and tackle behaviors and attitudes they'd like to change to enhance their well-being. The program is designed for buddying up and working with "accountability partners" -- sharing encouragement and nurturing confidence in each other's ability to make these positive changes.

Are you ready to set goals and strive to make changes in your life while encouraging others to do the same? Consider reaching out to your church and community by offering this wellness ministry through your congregation.

Please take a moment to learn more by visiting our LifeBalance webpage. And read more about it in the October issue of The Lutheran. Here's to your health and wholeness!

In Faith,

The Rev. Denver Bitner, D.Min.

P.S.  LifeBalance is for people of all kinds of faiths, not just Lutherans. However all ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) congregations in Illinois have recently received introductory materials about LifeBalance, so if you belong to an ELCA congregation, be sure to talk with your pastor about starting a LifeBalance program at your church.

OUR MISSION: Responding to the Gospel, Lutheran Social Services of Illinois brings healing, justice and wholeness to people and communities.
